Books & Technology: Friends or Foes

This event has already passed

Authors Nicholas Carr and Robin Sloan will be interviewed by Mercury News columnist Mike Cassidy onstage at the Campbell Heritage Theatre on January 22 at 7:30pm. Doors will open at 6:45pm. The event is free and is a kick-off to Silcon Valley Reads 2014, designed to promote reading and literacy, broaden the exposure to and appreciation of good literature, and build community.

Before the event begins, we'll be treated to music performed live by Westmont Jazz Combo I under the direction of Jesse Sanchez. And tonight we'll have a special guest appearance by R. Buckminster Fuller, a.k.a. actor Ron Campbell of the San Jose Repertory Theater's one-man show about the futurist and inventor.

The theme for Silicon Valley Reads 2014 is Books & Technology: Friends or Foes? Featured books are The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr and Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan.

Nicholas Carr writes about technology, culture, and economics. His most recent book, The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, is a 2011 Pulitzer Prize nominee and a New York Times bestseller. Nick is also the author of two other influential books, The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google (2008) and Does IT Matter? (2004).

Robin Sloan grew up near Detroit and now splits his time between Berkeley and the internet. From 2002 to 2012, he worked at Poynter, Current TV, and finally at Twitter in San Francisco, where he worked on media partnerships. His first novel, Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, has been described as a gleeful and exhilarating tale of global conspiracy, complex code-breaking, high-tech data visualization, young love, rollicking adventure, and the secret to eternal life - mostly set in a hole-in-the-wall San Francisco bookstore.
