Looking for a Home for Frontier Village Building Replicas

Posted on December 9th, 2015 by sheldon

Well, this doesn't have much to do with Downtown Campbell, but I'm hoping that someone out there might be able to help or know someone who might be able to keep a little bit of local history from vanishing again. You may have heard of a Campbell fella named Shaughnessy McGeehee who's spent the past 20 years rebuilding a miniature version of Frontier Village.

His tribute to Frontier Village includes tiny versions of key buildings like the school house, general store, and saloon. They're going to be demolished at the end of January unless someone can rescue them and give them a home. I've attached some photos of some of the buldings. I think there are a few more and as of yesterday, none of them had a home yet.

With the exception of the schoolhouse, the footprint of each mini building is about the size of a large walk-in closet and the usable space inside that being a little bit bigger than your average bedroom closet.

You can find out more about these buildings here:

Life is pretty good in Downtown Campbell these days, but you don't have to go back very far to run into the times when our small, but smiling district was in a perpetual state of being up and coming. There are only a handful of people left over from those difficult years who know this part of Downtown Campbell's history by heart.

Judy Aagard was one of those people. She contributed time, money, and effort to all sorts of things that might help Downtown Campbell be a more vibrant place to live, work, and be. She did it even when it seemed like it would be all for nothing and she did it even though many of the efforts would do little for her own business.

Even when she became ill, she would be first to express concern over how YOU were doing. That was the kind of person she was and just about everyone who's been in Downtown Campbell a while has had a chance to experience this for themselves. It's hard not to be moved when you encounter a person with Judy's warmth and spirit. Her passing is hard to fathom for the Downtown Campbell family. We've lost a special person. We're gonna miss her.

If you would like to learn more about Judy, the Tiny Tots website posted an endearing tribute.

We'd like to shine a light on Recycle Bookstore in Downtown Campbell this week. If you've got a book lover or a child on your holiday shopping list, check them out. You probably already know that they're the first place you should have in mind when looking for a used book in the South Bay, but they also have some new titles too. Their selection of new books specifically feature childrens' books, best sellers, and the kind of books that would go well on a coffee table. You know, "gifty" sort of books.

As an extra bonus, you can say hello to the always fabulous Bob Newhart Cat whenever you go visit.

Know Your Parking Options in Downtown Campbell

Posted on December 3rd, 2015 by sheldon

Ok, we can never do this enough times. It's going to be very crowded in Downtown Campbell this Saturday for the Carol of Lights celebration. Knowing your transportation and parking options will go a long way to having a wonderful start to the holiday season with the Campbell community.

Remember, the main strip will be closed to traffic and parking. Unless you get there way before the event starts, assume that the popular options like the 2nd Street Garage (next to Stacks) will be full. The normally dependable garage next to the water tower is going to fill up fast too. Parking at the Community Center and walking in is usually the best option for big events.

Please see our Map and Directions page for a full rundown on how to get here and how to stash your wheels if you're driving. Also, please share these tips with anyone who isn't very familiar with Downtown Campbell. We want this to be fun for everyone.

Looking for a truly unique and interesting gift? Pay a visit to Kaleido Lamps in Downtown Campbell. You may have seen puzzle lamps before, but nobody does them the way they do at Kaleido Lamps. They have some one of a kind creations and you can even make a request for a certain figure or character to really impress someone!

Volunteers Needed for Ainsley House Teas & Tours

Posted on December 3rd, 2015 by DCBA

Yesterday we posted some photos of the popular Ainsley House Teas & Tours put on by the Campbell Historical Museum and Ainsley House Foundation. Sure looked like fun, but only because they had a full complement of volunteers to help serve and setup between sittings. They need at least a couple of congenial helpers to put in a few hours on Saturday (Dec 5th) and next Thursday (Dec 10th). If you can help, please email Laura Rose at [email protected].

Donate to Keep the Carol of Lights Going Strong

Posted on November 30th, 2015 by DCBA

The 30th Anniversary of the Carol of Lights in Downtown Campbell is coming up in less than a week. We all love the Carol of Lights and want to keep it going, but in order to do so, we need to raise enough money to pay for the whole shebangs. There's no city funding for this. It's paid for through business sponsorships and small donations from people who've been generous enough to contribute a few bucks to help keep it going. If you love the Carol of Lights and you can spare a little money to help fund it, you can make a donation online through the Carol of Lights website.

Your donation will be made to the Campbell Parks and Recreation Foundation, a 501c3 organization. All donations collected will be set aside specifically to cover the costs of the Carol of Lights this year and in future years.

Campbell Con inks a Historical Footnote, Returning for 2016

Posted on November 18th, 2015 by DCBA

People think of the Campbell history as a showcase of wagon carts, canning technology, and orchard photos. Well, those things have a lot to do with Campbell history, but then there's this... Congrats to Campbell Con and its director Marina for becoming part of Campbell lore. And she just announced that the convention is going to be back for 2016. The date for Campbell Con 2016 is October 29th, 2016.

Greg "G" Williams at the Wine and Comedy Showcase

Posted on November 18th, 2015 by DCBA

Wine and Comedy Showcase, This Friday at Rendezvous! This month's headliner for the Wine & Comedy Showcase at Rendezvous Wine Bar is Greg “G” Williams, who is working diligently to be a breath of fresh air by taking a different path into the world of comedy. His comedic style arises from his day to day life as a male nurse. Raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina “G” joined the Army where he served for five years during Desert Storm. After the Army “G” became a Registered Nurse, specializing with premature infants. After discovering life in a hospital can be hilariously entertaining, “G” developed his act in the comedy clubs of Atlanta.

We posted photos last week of the first "Con" to setup in Campbell. It's been getting good reviews and I can attest that I think this reviewer with Shortboxed got it right. It was a cute bite sized con with a little of everything. It was a perfect Con for Campbell folks who want to check out the scene to see what the fuss is all about without having to plunk down a hefty multi-day entrance fee on top of a hotel room 12 hours down the road. It was their first year and they were encourage by how things went so they've already said they're going to be back for 2016! Be sure to keep your eye out for the 2016 date via the Downtown Campbell site or the Campbell Con site.
