Temporary Road Closure

Posted on August 27th, 2012 by Downtown Campbell

The City of Campbell would like the community to be aware of a temporary road closure of a portion of East Campbell Avenue in Downtown Campbell, from Central Avenue to the light rail tracks.

In order to minimize impact on businesses and commuters, the majority of the work will be performed at night. The closure will take place on Wednesday night, August 29, 2012 lasting until early Thursday morning, August 30. The road will also be closed on Tuesday, September 4, 7am-11am.

This work is being done to create a new utility connection for electrical service to 400 E. Campbell Avenue (the former Gaslighter Theater). The utility connection will require trenching on E. Campbell Avenue from an existing transformer in the westbound travel lane on E. Campbell Avenue to the project site. The closure is due to the narrow roadway and proximity to the light rail tracks.

Other work will taking place during the daytime hours, August 29 - September 7, 2012, will have traffic control in place as needed. This will allow through traffic, but the community is advised to expect traffic delays.

For more information, please contact Ed Arango, Civil Engineer, City of Campbell, 308-866-2166.

Update: We had to drop Singin' in the Rain from the runoff because the copyright owners are currently not allowing any showings of it

After four weeks of collecting nominations for the Sundown Cinema Audience Choice movie for 2012, we're down to four finalists in contention to win the honors to be the movie for our season end finale! With one exception, there's a definite musical theme to our finalists this year.

The Downtown Campbell Business Association (DCBA) wants to hear what you think about the new layout for the Sunday Farmers' Market. Your feedback will be taken into consideration as the groups decide whether or not to continue with the new layout.

a. every Sunday
b. 2-3 times per month
c. once a month or less

2) My thoughts about the new Farmers' Market layout are…

b. I prefer the shopping experience of the original market layout
c. I don't have a preference

UPDATE: We messed up the deadline date for the end of movie nominations. Movie nominations must be in no later than 5pm on Tuesday, August 7th (not 14th).

Sundown Cinema is seeking reliable, responsible volunteers with a good sense of humor to serve during our 2012 season, June 29 - August 31!

What is Sundown Cinema? It's a free outdoor movie series held on Friday nights in the parking lot next to Therapy in Downtown Campbell. Now in our 9th year, we screen classic films geared for all ages. Sundown Cinema is run entirely by volunteers and we pay for our operating budget through donations from the audience and sponsorships by local businesses and organizations. This is cinema run by the community for the community!

All of our volunteers work hard but we have a lot of fun. Many of our volunteers return year after year, but it's inevitable that some move away and have other issues take priority, so we're always looking for new folks to join our team!

We ask each volunteer to serve 3 Fridays over the course of our 10-week run - we'll work with your schedule to pick dates that work for you. Every Friday night, we have two main volunteer jobs:

Concessions Stand
Two people serve at the popcorn and concessions stand from 7pm until the movie ends (usually 11pm or a little later).

Greeting
Two people serve as greeters on the sidewalk, handing out Sundown Cinema flyers and answering questions from passersby and the audience. One greeter serves 7pm-9pm, and the other greeter serves 7pm until the end of the movie (usually 11pm or a little later).

Don't worry! We'll train you! If you're interested, please contact [email protected] by June 18, 2012.

Need a new home for those good (but bulky) books piling up in your living room? Ready to part with your old CDs & DVDs but know somebody else would enjoy them? Simply Smashing invites you to donate them to our book drive and the Los Gatos Chapter of Women's Networking Alliance will donate them to the Blue Star Moms of the South Bay. Your donations will be included in care packages sent to our troops all over the world.

Now through June 30, 2012, make a book/CD/DVD donation at Simply Smashing and we'll take 10% off your entire regular-price purchase! (Can not be combined with other offers. Excludes furniture, artwork, exchange, trade. layaway, and gift certificate purchases. There will be no price adjustments on previous purchases.)

The past few years as more and more people have laptops and smartphones we've been seeing more and more people come to the summer movies in Downtown Campbell with them pulled out. I'm sure this year we'll add tablet devices to the list of things people will bring with them to the movies.

To date, we haven't had a policy on use of personal electronic devices during movies. Our approach has been to only lay down rules when something gets to be a problem. It might be time to have a policy. Each year we've received more complaints from people that they're being distracted by someone in the crowd using a laptop or smart phone.

We're going to let our audience set the policy. Please vote on whether we should allow unlimited use of any electronic device, impose a complete ban, or allow limited use of smartphones for important matters. If you have anything extra to say, please post a comment with your thoughts.

Outdoor movie fans, keep your Friday nights reserved this summer. Sundown Cinema will be back for its ninth straight season starting on Friday, June 29th.

We have another great movie lineup this year with a highly selective collection of movie classics along with a few blockbusters. As always, by Sundown Cinema tradition, the last movie will be decided on in the final weeks by audience input.
