The Campbell Historical Museum announces that Rock Bottom Brewery of Campbell's annual Fire Chief Ale Promotion, starting February 25, 2014, will raise funds for the care and conservation of over 400 fire department-related items at the Campbell Historical Museum.

The Fire Chief Ale Promotion kicks off with a keg tapping on Tuesday, February 25 at 6pm at Rock Bottom's Campbell Pruneyard location, 1875 South Bascom Ave. Fire Chief Ale, a full-bodied amber with a dry, mildly hopped finish, is one of the specialty beers brewed throughout the year by Rock Bottom Brewery. The promotion continues through March 31, 2014, with a portion of all Fire Chief Ale sales donated to the Campbell Historical Museum and the Burn Foundation. Rock Bottom will display photographs and objects from the museum for the duration of the promotion.

Of the 10,000 objects, photographs, and documents in the Campbell Historical Museum collection, over 400 are directly related to the history of Campbell's fire department and paramedics. Rescue 25, a custom 1974 Chevrolet used by Campbell's first firefighter paramedic team, was donated to the City's Historical Museum in 2009 and restored over the course of four years. In addition, the Museum owns a 1917 American-LaFrance Double Tank Chemical Car Fire Engine re-built with parts from Campbell's first fire truck. The Museum collection also includes dozens of photographs of Campbell fire fighters as well as uniforms, equipment, and other fire paraphernalia. The collection, owned by the City of Campbell, is available to researchers by appointment.

For more information about the Campbell Historical Museum and this fundraiser, please phone Julie Carpenter, Museum Specialist, at 408-866-2758.

The Downtown Campbell Business Association would like to remind customers that the City of Campbell has banned the distribution of single-use plastic bags as of January 27, 2014. Recycled-content paper bags or reusable bags may be handed out for a minimum charge of 10 cents per bag (this will increase to 25 cents on January 1, 2015).

The new ordinance does not pertain to restaurants, fast-food places, and nonprofit charitable reuse organizations such as Goodwill. The ordinance also allows retailers to provide protective bags for produce, meat, prescriptions, live fish, greeting cards, and garment bags (dry cleaning) at no charge.

We encourage everyone to bring your own bags when you shop! The City Council hopes the plastic bag ban will reduce pollution, free up landfill space, and protect our environment. For more information, please visit the City of Campbell's website.

The Campbell Historical Museum and Ainsley House invites both amateur and professional photographers to submit photographs that capture the places, people, events, and environments that make Campbell unique. The deadline has now been extended to Friday, February 14, 2014.

The museum plans to exhibit these public entries March 1 - June 1, 2014, as well as historical images from the permanent collection that reflect the people, places, and events of Campbell. If you would like to participate, please e-mail [email protected] for guidelines and an application form. (Please note: the subject heading of the e-mail must read: "2014 Exhibition Application".) Only one entry per person. For more information or questions regarding the exhibition, please contact Anna Rosenbluth at 408-866-2759, or [email protected].

Calling All Decorators!

Posted on September 5th, 2013 by Downtown Campbell

Have you ever wanted to unleash your creative energy in a space that is not your own house but will be seen and admired by many? Perhaps decorating one of the rooms in the Historic Ainsley House is for you!

Campbell's Ainsley House has a few rooms still available to decorate for the holidays. The theme for 2013 is Silver Bells Holidays. Decorating will need to take place November 9-13, and decorations will stay up through Dec 19.

The Ainsley House provides guidelines for decorating inside a historic structure and does have some decorations available for you to use in your own creative way, or you may bring in your own decorations if desired.

If this sounds like a fun and different way to get into the holiday spirit, please contact Kerry Perkins for more information at 408-866 2718.

The Campbell Historical Museum and Ainsley House is looking for entries from the public of images they have taken that reflect Campbell's spirit. The museum would like to exhibit the first 25 entries received in our Ainsley House exhbition from March 1 - June 1, 2014, and allow the public to vote on which image they feel best captures the Spirit of Campbell. The winning entry will be accessioned into the permanent collection of the museum.

In addition to public entries, the exhibition will highlight historical images from the permanent collection that reflect the people, places, and events of Campbell. If you would like to participate, please e-mail [email protected] for the guidelines and application form. (Please note: the subject heading of the e-mail must read: "2014 Exhibition Application".) Due to limited space, we can only accept 25 entries; the first 25 entries we receive with the proper paperwork and that are ready to be hung will be accepted, so don't delay! Only one entry per person.

The Spirit of Campbell is photography exhibit that seeks to capture the spirit of Campbell through its people, places, and events. For more information or questions regarding the exhibition, please contact Anna Rosenbluth at 408-866-2759, or [email protected].

Please contact the museum at 408-866-2758 or via email if you're interested in volunteering. Don't fancy being a docent? Not a problem! We also need people to work at the admissions desk, in the gift shop, and in the garden. We can use volunteers with all sorts of talents! Contact us and we can talk about how you can volunteer here.

The Campbell Historical Museum offers artifacts and memorabilia that help us interpret and recall the vanishing world of Santa Clara's past. We have an acclaimed education program that has received outstanding marks from teachers and students from many districts in our county.

Hello Sundown Cinema Fans!

We've got some bad news, but we also have some hopeful news.

Sundown Cinema is canceled for the summer of 2013. That's the bad news. The good news is that we're working on a plan to move Sundown Cinema over to the Orchard City Green, which is the grassy courtyard next to the Campbell Library. It'd be a much nicer place for the movie series and we're talking to the City of Campbell about letting us move there next summer.

What happened was that the empty lot that we've been using is no longer available to us. The owner of the property came to the conclusion that it was hurting his best interests to allow the movie series to continue. He has a dispute with the city over the fate of that lot. We understand his position and we're grateful that we were able to use that space for so long. It served us well. In the early years, there were nights where the attendance was around 40 people if you counted generously. In recent years, we've had nights where we've lost count at 400. We've definitely grown up and maybe it was time for a move up anyway.

While we're disappointed about this year, we're excited about the possibilities that a bigger, better, and more comfortable space will bring to Sundown Cinema. As said above, we're talking to the city right now and expect to have something definite to announce soon. We're very optimistic that we'll be able to work things out with the City and come back with our 10th Anniversary Season of Sundown Cinema one year delayed.

Stay tuned. We'll push out announcements to the Sundown Cinema mailing list and to DowntownCampbell.com and the Downtown Campbell Facebook and Twitter feeds as things happen. If you want to be sure you have the latest news, please signup for the Sundown Cinema mailing list on this page:
