Sundown Cinema 2007
Sundown Cinema is a celebration of classic cinema and an exploration of the cultural aspects of an important American art form. This popular summer movie series was started by Campbell resident, Manuel Viveros and his arts organization, Casa de la Cultura Mexica, to give the community an opportunity to come together and enjoy the unique experience of seeing a movie outdoors together. Sundown Cinema is completely funded by private contributions and run by volunteers who believe in spreading culture and the spirit of community. If you would like to make a tax-deductable donation or volunteer to help with Sundown Cinema, please e-mail volunteer@socialwave.net.

Another excellent season - thanks to everyone for making and keeping this possible!!!! Did you catch that last line? Very glad to see attendance increasing from Season One to the present! A true testament to the power of community interest. We attend to watch and enjoy a movie, with friends and new acquaintances - and know and take advantage of the fact that Campbell is a great place to have a pint or a sip of wine and chat with friends, before or after the show. There couldn't be a better way to ease out of a work week. I don't yet know/understand the City's open container/public consumption regulations, or permit possibilities and allowances, so I will leave this to observations and discovery for the time being as the presence of alcohol in the audience becomes more obvious. If anyone knows if it's OK to hang out in a City lot consuming an adult beverage, please share the knowledge. One of the charms of this event is the community context that has and should continue to speak for itself - it's an uncomplicated movie showing for all to enjoy. We're not subject to glaring ads and mega-theater/multiplex social behavior reminders about silencing cell phones, not talking during the showing, etc., snooty ushers and endless minutes of frequent 'sssshhhhh'. Let's hope the event never comes to that type of in your face "stay out of others' face (and ears)" mass-messaging! This event began as and should always be a safe and sane, community-oriented gathering for our families, kids, neighbors and friends for us to show-off and enjoy the *best* Campbell and its community has to offer. Let us *all* enjoy the show - each and every line and scene - for this and many more seasons to come. ...did you catch that last line? |
